Quand un vétérinaire laotien est invité à La Havane en 1991, peu après la chute du Mur de Berlin et l’effondrement de l’Union soviétique, pour y rencontrer Fidel Castro, on peut s’attendre à une aventure pas ordinaire... Le Lider Maximo, qui ne cache pas son amour pour les vaches, le lait et les crèmes glacées, caresse le projet de repeupler le cheptel bovin cubain famélique en créant une immense ferme au Laos. Le docteur Bounthan, lauréat de l’Académie Skryabina de Moscou, et futur député, est chargé par son gouvernement de rencontrer Castro afin de ramener à Vientiane un vaillant étalon reproducteur,Fidelito, pour engrosser des vaches lao à la chaîne. Tout semble encore logique et même presque possible à ce point du récit... Mais entrent alors en scène Kennedy, Bush et Gorbatchev, la CIA, le KGB, des rebelles royalistes et la fatalité qui s’acharnent contre lFidelito et son cornac... Dans cette fable latino-indochinoise, l’auteur nous conduit au bout d’un délire géopolitique rafraîchissant qui se paye le luxe de considérer les relations internationales sous un autre jour. Une bouffée d’oxygène pour ceux qui sont fatigués de voir le monde marcher droit dans un mur qui n’est pas près de s’effondrer...

When a Laotian veterinarian is invited to Havana in 1991, shortly after the fall of the Berlin Wall and the collapse of the Soviet Union, to meet Fidel Castro, one can expect no ordinary adventure… The Líder Máximo, who made no secret of his love for cows, milk, and ice cream, is nurturing a plan to replenish Cuba’s emaciated cattle herd by creating a vast farm in Laos. Dr. Bounthan, a graduate of the Skryabin Academy in Moscow and a future member of parliament, is tasked by his government with meeting Castro in order to bring back to Vientiane a valiant breeding bull named Fidelito, destined to impregnate Lao cows on a grand scale. At this point in the story, everything still seems logical, even almost possible… But then, enter John F. Kennedy, George H. W. Bush, and Mikhail Gorbachev, along with the Central Intelligence Agency, the KGB, royalist rebels, and an unforgiving fate, all conspiring against Fidelito and his handler… In this Latin-Indochinese fable, the author takes us to the heights of a refreshingly wild geopolitical delirium that affords itself the luxury of viewing international relations from a different angle. A breath of fresh air for those weary of watching the world march straight into a wall that shows no sign of collapsing any time soon…
