C'est l'histoire d'Ita qui grandit à Sieradz, en Pologne, avec son père, marchand de harengs, et sa mère. Ils sont pauvres. Ils sont juifs. Après la mort des parents, emportée au hasard des routes, elle se retrouve à Liège, Ostende, Bruxelles puis Paris avec ce dé à coudre dont sa mère l'a convaincue de ne jamais se défaire pour survivre. L'histoire tragique qui se termine à l'aube de la rafle du Vel d'Hiv ne dit rien du ton ni du rythme du récit, ni des silences, ni du fil de la narration dont le déroulé, tel un poème épique, avance et revient avec sa scansion et ses refrains.

It is the story of Ita, who grows up in Sieradz, Poland, with her father, a herring merchant, and her mother. They are poor. They are Jewish. After the death of her parents, carried off by chance along the roads, she finds herself in Liège, Ostend, Brussels, and then Paris, with the thimble her mother convinced her never to part with if she wanted to survive. This tragic story, which ends on the eve of the Vel d’Hiv roundup, says nothing of the tone or the rhythm of the narrative, nor of its silences, nor of the thread of the narration whose unfolding, like an epic poem, moves forward and circles back with its scansion and its refrains.
