« Un musée se “fréquente”. Or fréquenter se dit d’un lieu où l’on va souvent, comme aussi d’une personne avec laquelle se nouent des liens suivis. La relation est forcément dans la durée : on ne peut être l’ami d’un jour ; le propre d’un “ami” est qu’on le revoit, ne serait-ce qu’en pensée. Bien sûr on est d’abord “ami” d’un musée parce qu’on est plusieurs à vouloir soutenir, développer et faire “rayonner” ce musée : il y a là partage et même connivence au sein d’un “nous”. Quelle singulière communauté d’amitié et d’activité peut donc se nouer autour d’un musée ? » Qu’est-ce que devenir « ami » d’un musée ? Que retrouve-t-on au coeur des actions qu’on fait pour le promouvoir ? N’est-ce pas qu’à le fréquenter, on ne voit pas qu’une fois une oeuvre, mais qu’on la revoit ? On est bien sûr ému par un tableau que l’on découvre. Mais en le revoyant, on le dé-couvre de ce dont la vue a commencé par le recouvrir : vue formée, normée, habituée, marquée par tout ce qu’on a déjà vu. Afin de voir ce tableau véritablement émerger, ne faut-il pas en effet le dégager de la vision dans laquelle la vue s’enlise pour faire enfin surgir le visible et y accéder ?

“A museum is ‘frequented.’ Now, to frequent means to visit a place often, just as it means to form ongoing bonds with a person. The relationship is necessarily one of duration: one cannot be a friend for a day; the very nature of a ‘friend’ is that one sees them again, if only in thought. Of course, one is first and foremost a ‘friend’ of a museum because many of us wish to support, develop, and help it ‘shine’: there is sharing, even complicity, within a ‘we.’ What singular community of friendship and activity can thus form around a museum?” What does it mean to become a “friend” of a museum? What do we rediscover at the heart of the actions we take to promote it? Is it not that, in frequenting it, we do not see a work of art just once, but that we see it again? We are, of course, moved by a painting we discover for the first time. But in seeing it again, we uncover what our initial sight had begun to cover over: sight that is formed, normalized, habituated, marked by everything we have already seen. To truly allow the painting to emerge, must we not free it from the vision in which our sight becomes mired, so that the visible may finally arise and we may truly access it?
