Octobre 2019. Au Liban, au Chili, en France, plusieurs manifestants et insurgés étaient grimés en clowns, reprenant le maquillage du Joker dans le film éponyme de Todd Phillips. Comment diable le fameux criminel fou de la fiction peut-il devenir l’emblème des insurrections contemporaines ? Le film a été plébiscité pour son «réalisme social». Or, cette interprétation repose en partie sur une erreur. Si ces manifestants sont fidèles au Joker, ce n’est pas simplement en se maquillant et en occupant les rues ; c’est en se produisant eux-mêmes en tant qu’images, – en photographiant, en filmant, en diffusant en réseau cette insurrection. Elle est beaucoup plus une insurrection par les signes, immatérielle et iconomique, qu’un soulèvement spontané du « peuple » ou de la « plèbe ». Il est souvent dit que la pensée du Joker ne se situe pas sur le plan de la pensée normale, qu’il a une logique autre, et que personne ne peut parvenir à le comprendre. Le postulat de ce livre est qu’il existe une logique du Joker. De manière générale, la folie est éminemment politique ; pour connaître la réalité d’une époque, il suffit de choisir soigneusement le fou qui pourra nous la révéler, et de lui prêter l’oreille. La réalité contemporaine est régie par la logique du Joker. Comprendre la folie du Joker, c’est nous comprendre nous-mêmes. Cet essai n’est pas un essai sur le cinéma, mais un essai sémiopolitique, sur le rapport entre le signe et son objet, sur le rôle des images dans la production de la réalité sociale. L’entrée du Joker en politique marque l’An Un de ce qu’il faudra appeler l’ère de l’iconomorphose.  

October 2019. In Lebanon, Chile and France, several demonstrators and insurgents were dressed up as clowns, using the make-up of the Joker in Todd Phillips' eponymous film. How on earth can the famous mad criminal of fiction become the emblem of contemporary uprisings? The film has been praised for its "social realism". But this interpretation is partly based on a mistake. If these demonstrators are loyal to the Joker, it's not simply by putting on make-up and occupying the streets; it's by producing themselves as images - by photographing, filming, and networking this insurrection. It is much more an insurrection through signs, immaterial and iconomical, than a spontaneous uprising of the 'people' or the 'plebs'. It is often said that the Joker's thinking is not on the level of normal thinking, that he has a different logic, and that no one can understand him. The premise of this book is that there is a Joker logic. Generally speaking, madness is eminently political; to know the reality of an era, all we have to do is carefully choose the madman who can reveal it to us and listen to him. Contemporary reality is governed by the logic of the Joker. To understand the madness of the Joker is to understand ourselves. This essay is not an essay on cinema, but a semiopolitical essay on the relationship between the sign and its object, on the role of images in the production of social reality. The Joker's entry into politics marks Year One of what we shall call the era of iconomorphosis.
