À la fin du mois d’août 1937, le reporter de guerre Robert Capa débarque à New York après une traversée de l’Atlantique en paquebot. Il a 23 ans, il est déjà veuf : un mois plus tôt, sa compagne photographe Gerda Taro a été tuée lors de la guerre d’Espagne à Brunete, près de Madrid, alors qu’il se trouvait à Paris. Ce séjour est l’occasion pour Capa de s’extraire de son désespoir et de mener à bien un projet de livre. Un album à la mémoire de Gerda, intitulé Death in the Making, pour évoquer en images les douze derniers mois qu’ils ont passés en Espagne à couvrir la Guerre civile. Après Gerda, livre sur la naissance d’un livre, roman où se mêle histoire et fiction, recrée le tourbillon de ces six semaines à New York, lors desquelles remontent les souvenirs de cette année 1936-1937, ses violences, ses déchirements qui bouleversèrent aussi bien le couple Taro-Capa que l’Europe entière.

At the end of August 1937, war reporter Robert Capa landed in New York after crossing the Atlantic on an ocean liner. He was 23 years old and already a widower: a month earlier, his photographic partner Gerda Taro had been killed during the Spanish Civil War in Brunete, near Madrid, while he was in Paris. This stay was an opportunity for Capa to escape his despair and to complete a book project. An album in memory of Gerda, entitled Death in the Making, to evoke in images the last twelve months they spent in Spain covering the Civil War.
